Even so, I want to prevent the possibility of anyone mistaking this book for something it’s not. If it strikes you as the self-congratulatory memoir of some asshole’s charmed life, look deeper; if it seems like a stretch for a hard luck story, you’d be wrong again. I’m well aware of the fact that I had it easier than most—possibly you, too.

So what is it then? Part meditation, part manifesto, it is a tool wrapped in a tale—a testament to the transformational power of truth. It’s a book for fathers, sons, and the women in their lives. It’s for anyone who feels alone in the dark, disconnected from the exceptionalism that is their birthright.

Regardless of what I say, it will be you who determines whether this is more than just the story of a man who set himself on fire to reveal his own darkness: a liar who fell in love with the truth; a quitter who found his grit; a taker who knows what it means to give.
